This series documents the painted backdrops used for a yearly Christmas Village in Chippewa Falls, WI. These plywood stands represent a mixture of generic Victorian scenes and local historic sites. I was initially drawn to their simplified design and construction, but over time saw them as more nuanced symbols of rural identity. The nostalgia and warmth rendered on these flattened architectural spaces suggests a particular vision of utopia. At the same time, the photographs show the artifice and flatness of these sets.
